Build Back Better

As the country moves through the phases, cautiously towards a post pandemic period, there is an opportunity for employers to adopt the 'Build Back Better' concept. A concept adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to use a disaster "to create more resilient nations and societies than before through the implementation of well-balanced disaster risk reduction measures, including physical restoration of infrastructure, revitalization of livelihood and economy/industry, and the restoration of local culture and environment." What we haven't fully realized yet is the holistic impact of the pandemic on both our society and economy.

Businesses will need to take stock from what they've learned from the pandemic in respect to their business continuity plans, their resilience and sustainability. How they've supported and communicated with their workforce, recognizing as the restrictions lift and employees return to work what barriers may exist. A recent study referenced by IOSH, highlight that top of the lists of fears of those returning to work (45%) was bringing the virus into their home with a third of people not trusting their colleagues to take proper precautions in their own lives. An opportunity now exists to create workplaces and environments that both protect and improve people's physical and mental health.
